GLENDALE : Fire at Warehouse Puzzles Officials

Share

A fire at a Glendale self-storage business Tuesday night destroyed an old piano, an ice chest and some other items, but firefighters said the blaze could have been far worse if not for a sprinkler system.

Battalion Chief Mike Carter said fire officials were baffled as to what caused the 8:30 p.m. fire at Rene’s Van and Storage, 6527 San Fernando Road.

“We haven’t found a logical reason for the fire to start,” Carter said. “We’re not able to identify a source of ignition.”

The 32,000-square-foot warehouse had closed for business at 4 p.m. and was empty when the fire was reported, Carter said. Five wooden storage vaults were destroyed and several others damaged, but sprinklers kept the fire from spreading to other vaults and from damaging the building itself, Carter said.

“This could have been a much bigger disaster in terms of property loss,” he said.

Arson was not strongly suspected in the fire because the items stored in the vaults were not particularly valuable, fire officials said.
