LAGUNA BEACH : Cleanup Rules for Dog Walkers OKd
The City Council has given final approval to a law requiring pet owners to tote a container for animal waste whenever they walk their dogs.
While pet owners are already required by law to pick up after their pets, city officials say that particular law is often ignored.
Police Chief Neil J. Purcell Jr. has maintained that requiring residents to carry disposal containers with them will encourage them to clean up after their pet.
The council unanimously approved the ordinance this week. The new law, which says residents must carry “a suitable wrapper, bag or container,” when walking dogs, will become effective Sept. 22.
The fine for first, second and third offenses are $25, $50 and $100, respectively.
Purcell has said animal control officers will issue warnings before giving citations for the first few months.
The law does not apply to blind people with dogs.
