CENTER DEDICATION: Los Angeles Cardinal Roger M. Mahony will be the principal speaker Monday at 10 a.m. dedication ceremonies for the Catholic Charities Glendale Community Center, which will provide social services to youths, immigrants, troubled families and others in need.

The new building on San Fernando Road replaces an old Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) building that had become dilapidated and was torn down in 1992.

Built with federal funds allocated by the city of Glendale, the center will be operated by the Catholic Charities department of the Los Angeles archdiocese.

LABOR DAY OBSERVANCE: Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) will talk about immigration issues and bills before Congress dealing with health care and jobs on Sept. 4 during the sixth annual San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council Labor Day Celebration in Northridge.

Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon and John Perez, chair of the Valley Labor, Political and Education Council, will also speak.

Participating clergy include the Revs. Harry Adams, Chatsworth United Methodist Church; Charlotte Shivvers, Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society; Jeff Utter, Chatsworth Congregational Church, and Tiser Turner, Greater Community Baptist Church in Pacoima.

The observance at the Congregational Church of Northridge, 9659 Balboa Blvd., will begin at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a free barbecue at 6 p.m. For information, call (818) 718-6460.

HOLY DAYS MUSIC: Cantor Fran Lawson will perform at Temple Judea in Tarzana at 9:30 p.m. today in a free concert introducing the music and themes of the approaching Jewish High Holy Days.

Lawson will be accompanied by a vocal quartet, piano, cello and flute in the program. The 10-day Jewish holiday begins on Labor Day with Rosh Hashana eve services.

MIRTH & MUSIC: A musical service titled “Humor as a Spiritual Resource” will be presented at Emerson Unitarian Church on Sunday by guest vocalists Julie and Fred Land and Darcey Lober from the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

The service, which begins at 10:30 a.m., is being held at the Canoga Park Senior Citizens Center, 7326 Jordan Ave. For information, call (818) 887-6101.

BAGEL BRUNCH: Volunteers are invited to enjoy free bagels Sunday while assembling packages of food for distribution to the needy at Sova, the kosher food pantry in a mini-mall at 6027 1/2 Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana.

The bagel brunch between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. is sponsored by a young adult program of the Jewish Federation Council. Volunteers planning to participate are asked to call (213) 683-3433, day or night.

WATTS-AGOURA LINK: The Rev. John Coleman, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church in Watts, will preach on “last days” biblical interpretations at Agoura Bible Fellowship, 5564 Foothill Drive, during its 9:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday.

Coleman has been heard for years on Christian radio--on KKLA FM’s “Night Light” program and on his own Sunday morning program on KGER AM. For information, call the Agoura church at (818) 889-7449.
