Work in Progress : CSUN Readies for Classes

Share

Cal State Northridge officials predict less chaos for Monday’s opening of the fall semester than they had for the opening of the spring semester on Feb. 14, which was plagued by unusable temporary classrooms and confusion over how to get around the quake-wracked 353-acre campus.

Most of the classes still will be held in temporary trailers, but nearly all of the classes that were forced to off-campus sites during the spring semester will be held on campus this fall. Three new buildings under construction at the time of the quake will open and the core of the Delmar T. Oviatt Library--considered the heart and soul of the campus--will reopen for research and studying.

The campus layout remains virtually the same as in the spring, with “recovery villages” of portable trailers for classrooms and offices scattered around the campus. Repairs will continue through the semester, and officials are hopeful they can remove as many as 25% of the trailers by the end of the year.

Tips on Getting Around

Using the campus shuttle bus: A free shuttle bus will circle the campus every eight minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and until 6 p.m. on Friday. There will also be free shuttle buses from each arriving and departing Metrolink train (Northridge station) 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Parking on campus: There will be more than 6,600 student parking spaces available on campus, about half of them in the North Campus lots. All street parking regulations are now in effect, so pay attention to posted signs.

Safety precautions: Avoid construction sites. If you have questions about the safety of any area, you can call campus security, 24 hours a day, 885-2111.
