*** Abbey Lincoln, Hank Jones, “When There Is Love,” Gitanes Jazz. Two of jazz’s most distinct voices come together in a relaxed program that shows both off to advantage. Lincoln’s voice, somewhat huskier than in years past, still retains its attractive depth and color--spicy on “C’est Si Bon,” warm and intimate on her own “A Part of Me.” Her struggle to find pitch on “I Should Care” makes her delivery even more poignant. Jones, working alone on “Close Your Eyes,” proves himself an astute spokesman, juggling rhythms and soloing in almost conversational tunes. “Angel Face,” with words by Lincoln and music by Jones, is especially heavenly.

Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good, recommended), four stars (excellent).
