Beaches Uncrowded as Holiday Kicks Off

Despite clear skies and warm temperatures, lifeguards at Ventura County beaches reported uncrowded conditions Saturday, the first day of the Labor Day weekend.

“We’ve had a lot busier weekends this summer,” said Scott Parrish, a Ventura State Beach lifeguard. Parish expected bigger crowds today and Monday.

Forecasters are predicting early morning and late-night fog but otherwise sunny weather with beachside temperatures in the 70s and inland temperatures reaching 90 degrees, said Stuart Ceto, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service.

Except for a fatal accident on the 101 freeway in Santa Barbara County, the local California Highway Patrol reported no major accidents or incidents Friday night or Saturday evening.

The CHP has boosted patrols over the holiday weekend, reporting a lower than average number of drunk-driving arrests for the first night of the holiday.
