Mucha Wins Tournament After Davies Falters

Barb Mucha took advantage of Laura Davies’ front-nine collapse Monday and posted a one-shot victory over Kim Shipman in the State Farm Rail Classic in Springfield, Ill.

Mucha shot a final-round five-under 67 and finished the 54-hole tournament with a 13-under 203 total. Shipman closed with a 69.

Davies had a four-shot lead entering the final round. She missed short birdie putts on the first two holes and another on No. 4. She found the water on Nos. 6, 7 and 8 and finished the front side at five-over 41. She ended tied for 14th at 208 after closing with a 77.

Baseball

Former Detroit Tiger and Dodgers pitcher Hank Aguirre, who moved from baseball to the auto industry where he created jobs for hundreds of Latinos, died of prostate cancer at his home in Bloomfield, Mich. He was 62.

Aguirre, a three-time All-Star who grew up in Azuza, began an auto parts manufacturing company called Mexican Industries, and employed 800 Latino workers from southwestern Detroit.

Aguirre was 75-72 with a 3.25 earned-run average in 16 years. His best season was 1962, when he had a 16-8 record and a league-leading 2.21 ERA for the Tigers.

Aguirre also was known for being one of baseball’s worst hitters. He batted .085 (33 for 388), with no home runs, and was two for 75 (.027) in 1962.

Boxing

Ike Williams, lightweight champion of the world in the late-1940s, one of boxing’s golden eras, was found dead in his Wilshire district apartment. He was 71.

Police are investigating Williams’ death, a spokesman said. Witnesses said a television was missing from the apartment.

Williams was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1978 and had a professional record of 123-19-5, with 60 knockouts.

He won the lightweight title in 1945 by defeating Juan Zorita, who stayed in touch with Williams and was one of the first people to discover Williams’ body Monday. Williams lost the title in 1951 to James Carter.

Soccer

A top British soccer player has been charged with murder, police in the northwestern English city of Liverpool said.

James Kelly, 21, who plays for the first-division Wolverhampton Wanderers, was to appear in court today with his brother John, 22, and another man.

The charge follows the death of Peter Dunphy, 26, whose body was found outside a hotel in Liverpool on Sunday.

Miscellany

Two-time professional world cycling champion Gianni Bugno was suspended for two years because he tested positive for an excessive amount of caffeine after a minor Italian road race last month.

Connie Kalitta, Cruz Pedregon, Warren Johnson and David Schultz each won titles at the 40th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals in Clermont, Ind.

McLaren Peugeot could be banned from the rest of the Formula One season after being called to appear before the sport’s ruling body, the International Automobile Federation, for using an illegal gearbox at the San Marino Grand Prix.

Finland’s J.J. Lehto will replace suspended Formula One standings leader Michael Schumacher at the wheel of in his Benetton-Ford at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.
