Encino : Culinary Event Gives Schools Sustenance

It’s almost that time again, to pig out on pizza, savor fine wine and gobble rich desserts without a twinge of guilt.

In fact, chowing down at the seventh annual Taste of Encino is actually something to feel good about.

“What you eat goes right back into the community,” said Daniel Weidman, a spokesman for the event, which every year raises about $16,000 for local schools.

About 34 San Fernando Valley restaurants will offer low-priced samples of their fare Sept. 17 and 18 at the Courtyard Shops of Encino on Ventura Boulevard.

Sponsored by the Encino Chamber of Commerce, the event drew 25,000 people last year and raised $16,000 for area schools. About that much also went to the chamber for community projects such as graffiti removal.

This year, Birmingham High School, Taft High School, Zane Grey High School, Emelita Street Elementary, Encino Elementary, Nestle Avenue Elementary and Mulholland Middle School will benefit from the event.

With the proceeds, the chamber purchases supplies, including pens, pencils and computer equipment, that schools have requested and donates them directly to the schools.

The Courtyard Shops of Encino is at 17401 Ventura Blvd. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Daily admission is $2 for the general public, $1 for senior citizens and free for children under 5.
