L.A. County Fair: 24 Days of Flair

Share

It’s tough to decide which is the bigger attraction at the L.A. County Fair in Pomona--the array of food or the entertaining oinkers.

Either way, it’s pig-out time starting Friday--and will be for the next 24 days.

The best way to approach the fair (we know this from years of research) is to map out a plan to see the livestock, pick out your boat or a back-yard spa from the new products exhibits (even if it is only wishful thinking) while pacing yourself through samples of everything from corn on the cob to sticky buns, fudge to french fries. (Hint: It’s even better if you can share a portion, that way you will have room to sample even more.)

It’s a good idea to hit the carnival midway early in your day, because the bigger rides may send your stomach flipping opposite the rest of you. Take time to see the out-of-the-way attractions that offer delightful surprises--such as Heritage Farm, where you’re likely to see newborn animals.

The ideal way to attend the fair is on a two-day pass (see discounts below)--spend one day exploring the exhibits (Youth in Action, Wines of America, arts and crafts) and seeing the pig races, Budweiser Clydesdales and other grounds entertainment, and the other day taking the rides, playing the games and seeing the grandstand entertainment (including Diamond Rio and Rick Trevino, Saturday, 7 p.m.).

Opening day is Friday, hours are 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Hours Saturdays, 9 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sundays, 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; Mondays-Thursdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Adults, $8 (two-day pass, $12); seniors, $6; children 6-12, $4 (two-day pass, $6); 5 and under free. Unlimited rides Monday-Thursday, $12 ($15 for opening weekend). The L.A. County Fair, 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona, runs through Oct. 2. (909) 623-3111.
