Mike McGroarty, an expert in rescues in large-scale disasters, started his new job Friday as chief of the Fire Department.

McGroarty was appointed to take over from Benjamin R.E. Wilkins.

He is now responsible for the department’s $3.2-million budget, 36 firefighters and two fire stations.

City Manager Lee Risner said McGroarty, who has worked for La Habra for the past 19 years as a firefighter, captain and battalion chief, is known throughout the country for his expertise in heavy equipment rescue.

McGroarty serves on several state and federal task forces that respond to major disasters throughout the country. He also writes for training manuals and is a lead instructor for advanced rescue training for the state Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

He has led rescues of victims trapped under buildings or heavy structures because of earthquakes and other disasters, including hurricanes.

“I’ve been around a little bit,” McGroarty said. “Every time there’s a major disaster in the country, I’m advised.”

Wilkins, 55, retired Thursday after eight years in the department’s top job.

Wilkins, who began his firefighting career 30 years ago, said it is time to do “other things.” He plans to devote more time to his woodworking and glass-staining hobbies with his wife, Patricia.
