Salsa Signs Perez of U.S. National Team

The Salsa, battling for first place in the APSL, Friday announced the signing of midfielder Hugo Perez, a member of the U.S. World Cup team.

Perez, 30, played in the U.S. team’s 2-0 loss to England on Wednesday in London.

Perez will be on loan from the U.S. Soccer Federation through Oct. 15, the date of the APSL championship game.

The Salsa plays host to Seattle at 6 p.m. Sunday at Cal State Fullerton.

Two of the county’s top returning boys’ cross-country runners will compete today at Laguna Hills High in the season’s first invitational.

Adalberto Sanchez of Capistrano Valley and Joel Orozco of Santa Ana Valley will meet in the boys’ Division I competition. Races begin at 8 a.m.

The Edison girls’ team, paced by seniors Jeannie and Jennifer Formosa, won the State Division II title last season.

Elyse Homberger, one of the most promising members of Edison’s team, will miss today’s race as well as Thursday’s Sunset League clash with Esperanza. She is rehabilitating a fractured tibia she suffered during track season.
