STARTING OVER: Quake-damaged CalArts in Valencia began its 25th year Monday (B14) on a good note. Two former students won Emmys on Sunday. Michael Richards was best supporting actor in “Seinfeld,” and Michael Pressman produces “Picket Fences,” the best drama series. . . . But large trash dumpsters and the presence of construction workers showed that the campus hadn’t finished rebuilding.

CD DETECTIVE: Mario Yagoda isn’t best known as a big CD collector. But he sure has a lot of them. He’s a Glendale detective assigned to stem the illegal trade of pirated music cassettes and compact discs in the Valley. . . . Detectives have conducted several major stings against local retailers. See Valley Business, Page 3.

TEEN WINNER: Win the U. S. Open girls’ singles title? Northridge’s Meilen Tu was just hoping she’d finish the tournament in one piece. She had groin and stomach injuries, and was in so much pain she couldn’t hit a hard first serve. . . . But Tu, 16, won Sunday’s title, and it may have changed her life. “It opens a lot of doors for me,” she says. “It shows me I can play professionally.”
