COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Stokes Expected to Play on Saturday
After a dull offensive effort that both quarterback Wayne Cook and Coach Terry Donahue said could have been brightened by the presence of wide receiver J.J. Stokes, Donahue said Monday that he expected to have Stokes back for Saturday’s game at Nebraska.
Stokes suffered a bruised thigh on the second play of the season-opening victory against Tennessee, and though he said he would play against Southern Methodist on Saturday, was unable to do so. Without the biggest of their big-play men, the Bruins staggered to a 17-10 victory.
“He’s certainly much closer to playing now,” Donahue said. “By Wednesday or Thursday, we’ll know.”

Donahue said that sophomore Andy Colbert will replace senior Carl Greenwood at cornerback after Greenwood suffered a broken right ankle Saturday. . . . Chad Overhauser, a redshirt freshman, stepped in for Paul Kennedy when he suffered a knee injury. Kennedy, a senior, is sidelined for the season, leaving the Bruins shallow on the offensive line.
