NORWALK : After Years of Debate, City OKs Hindu Temple
The City Council has approved a Hindu congregation’s plans to build a $1.2-million temple at 15213 Pioneer Blvd., ending nearly two years of debate between the religious group, the city and residents that live near the site.
The council approved the measure last week by a 4-1 vote. Councilwoman Judith Brennan cast the dissenting vote. “I had problems with the traffic pattern and felt there was not enough parking,” Brennan said.
The temple will have room for 322 people. The site also will have 105 parking spaces.
A small group of residents spoke against the plan at the council meeting, saying they feared the temple will attract worshipers throughout Southern California, clogging residential streets.
In July, the council ordered the group to alter the temple’s design, replacing its golden Indian domes with a red tile roof to blend with the Spanish-style architecture in the area.
