VENTURA : Design Panel Decides Rink Site Is Unsafe

Share

A proposed site for Ventura’s first outdoor skating rink for in-line hockey leagues is too close to the Ventura Freeway, the city’s design review committee said this week.

The committee, which met Monday afternoon, is an advisory board only. Would-be builders of the rink on Arundell Avenue said they plan to appeal the decision to Ventura’s Planning Commission.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Nicole Soroka, owner of Street Shark’s In-Line Hockey League and In-Line Hockey Shop on Main Street. “My ultimate concern is safety.”

Soroka and her in-line hockey-playing husband, Steve, decided to build the rink because their league has grown too large to fit into the busy schedule at an indoor rink in Oxnard, where they now play.

Nicole Soroka said they wanted to install a $100,000, partly prefabricated, 180-by-80-foot rink. But members of the city committee worried about hazards from cars crashing off the highway and onto the facility.
