Troy’s Ground Game Able to Bury Garden Grove, 23-6

Larry Montgomery spearheaded a Troy ground attack that gained 266 yards to lead the visiting Warriors to a 23-6 victory over Garden Grove in a nonleague game Thursday night.

Montgomery carried the ball 24 times for 199 yards, 139 in the second half. About the only thing Montgomery did not do was get into the end zone; He left that to backfield mate Ryl Relatores, who scored on two short-yardage bursts in the second half for the Warriors (2-0).

Garden Grove struck first with a 55-yard drive on the game’s first series, capped by a three-yard run by Ruben Reyna. It was a downhill ride the rest of the night for the Argonauts (0-2).

Troy took the lead for good with 9 minutes 14 seconds remaining in the second quarter, when Kevin Gray connected with wide-open Frank Pacheco for a 38-yard score.

The Warriors put away the game in the third quarter. The defense ended Garden Grove’s first drive of the half after three plays and as many yards, turning the ball over to Montgomery and the offense. Montgomery responded with a 73-yard drive--including runs of 28 and 33 yards--on the ensuing possession that culminated with Relatores’ first score from two yards out.
