In the 1880s, county residents argued endlessly about what to name the area, according to the book “100 Years of Yesterdays.”

Anaheim leaders wanted “Anaheim County.” Santa Ana residents liked “Santa Ana County”--even though one critic said the name could be confused with “Satanic County,” “Santanna” or “Santy Annie.” Both cities also vied to be the county seat.

Finally, in 1889, the area agreed to name the county after its most important crop, the orange. But even that name met with initial opposition from some who felt it ignored the area’s thriving grape and livestock farms.
