Power Outage Affects 3,000 Oxnard Homes

A power outage in the Channel Islands Harbor area of Oxnard kept more than 3,000 homes in the dark during the early morning hours Saturday, and left another 150 residences without power until 3:30 p.m., a Southern California Edison spokesman said.

The outage occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday when a main cable running through the area failed, said John Britton, Edison’s area manager. Maintenance crews arrived almost immediately, but it took several hours to locate the damaged cable, Britton said.

“You’re talking miles and miles of cable, and they just have to keep narrowing the area down until they find the damage,” he said.

Britton speculated that water somehow seeped into the cable causing it to short out, but as of late Saturday the cause of the failure was still under investigation.

The main cable was repaired by 9:30 a.m., but about 150 Edison customers along Porpoise Way and Peninsula Road remained without power until the cable leading into their area was fixed about 3:30, Britton said.
