David Akers kicked a 31-yard field goal with 49 seconds to play Saturday night, lifting Louisville to a 25-22 victory over Arizona State.

Arizona State (1-1) got the ball on its 30 but Jake Plummer threw two interceptions and was sacked twice before the final gun.

Louisville (1-2), despite committing 17 penalties for 154 yards, put together a winning drive led by backup quarterback Jason Payne.

Louisville got the ball at its 49 after stopping the Sun Devils with 4:30 to play.

On second and six from the Arizona State 33, Eric Schmidt tackled Payne for a big loss, but Schmidt was called for a 15-yard personal-foul penalty for grabbing Payne’s face mask.

That gave the Cardinals a first down on the Sun Devil 18.

Anthony Shelman, trying to get Louisville into field-goal position, carried into the middle of the field for a one-yard gain to the Sun Devil 14 on his 27th carry. He ran for 112 yards. Arizona State called its last timeout with 53 seconds to play.

Louisville had tied the score at 22-22 with 4:53 remaining when Shelman scored on a two-yard run and Akers added the extra point.

The drive started at the Louisville 20 with 10:57 to play. On a first-and-20 play, quarterback Marty Lowe passed 31 yards to Jamie Asher, putting the ball on the Arizona State 33.

Shelman carried five of the next six plays, gaining 22 yards at the end of the drive.
