COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Lumberjacks, Cardinal Win UC Irvine Meet

Northern Arizona, which had the top three finishers and five of the top six, captured the men’s championship with 17 points at the UC Irvine cross-country championships Saturday at Fairview Park.

UC Irvine placed third with 109 points. Stanford was second with 40 points.

The Anteaters’ top men’s finishers were Bryan Contreras, who finished the 8,000-meter race in 12th place (24:57), and Todd Coulston, who finished in 19th place in 25:17. Tim Martin of Northern Arizona won in 24:15.

Stanford, led by Kortney Dunscombe’s third-place finish, won the women’s competition.

Stanford won the meet with 30 points, placing six runners in the top 10. Arkansas, last year’s NCAA runner-up, finished second with 39 points.

The Razorbacks’ Megan Flowers won the individual title with a time 17:30 over 3.25 miles.

UC Irvine finished fifth in the meet with 126 points.

In the San Diego State Invitational:

SCC takes second--Southern California College, led by Jason Schaefer (27:16), Jon Bishop (27:25) and Wes Hinson (27:25), finished second behind Grand Canyon in the open division of the 8K race.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0--Popi Edwards had 11 kills and Meredith Fletcher added 25 assists for visiting UC Irvine (1-7, 0-1) in the 5-15, 6-15, 5-15 loss. Hawaii improved to 5-1, 1-0.

New Mexico State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Chelsea Wilhite had eight kills and Melissa Blackler added 21 assists for visiting Cal State Fullerton (0-9, 0-2), which lost, 9-15, 6-15, 8-15.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Southern California College 3, Concordia 0--Celeste Young and Simone Burgesmeir each had 13 kills and Kara Jean Stephenson added 43 assists to lead Southern California College, 15-12, 15-12, 15-9.
