Hawaii Latest in Series of Cal-amities

THE COLLEGES

Cal played host to Hawaii on Saturday but even the home-continent advantage didn’t help the Mouldin’ Bears. They followed their opening defeat to San Diego State with a humbling 7-21 loss to the snarling Rainbows.

The two setbacks have substantially damaged Cal’s chances of gaining admission to the powerful Western Athletic Conference, one of its cherished goals.

If it’s any consolation, though, the Mouldin’ Bears have moved into the Bottom Ten lead. No. 2 is Iowa State (0-3), which is believed to be the first Big Eight team to lose games to Western Michigan and Northern Iowa in the same season (if not, decade).

And congratulations to Chapman, which ended a 62-year winless streak with a 30-13 victory over Whittier. The school hadn’t played a game since 1932, when it misplaced its only football.

THE PROS

And what a colorful display “Throwbacks Weekend” turned out to be, as the teams dressed up in outfits of old to celebrate the NFL’s 75th anniversary. The fans did the same, including New Orleans followers, who put paper sacks over their heads.

Ironically, the Aints spoiled everything with a 9-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Yucks to leave the ranks of the unwon.

Four winless teams remain, including the Cincinnati Bungles (0-3). They came up with their usual big plays, including a fair catch called by punt returner Corey Sawyer on his own one-yard line.

The leader of the pack remains Buddy Ryan’s Flagstaff Cardinals, whose uniforms were as old as their offense in a 0-32 loss to Cleveland. Having already snapped up Raider castoffs Steve Beuerlein and Jay Schroeder, Ryan is said to be looking for Todd Marinovich. Now where can that nude surfer be?
