Desperate for defense, the Denver Broncos brought back one of their old warriors, signing 35-year-old safety Dennis Smith. The hard-hitting Smith, entering his 14th season for the Broncos, is expected to start Monday night against the Buffalo Bills at Buffalo. . . . The San Francisco 49ers shook up their secondary to make room for Deion Sanders, who will start at right cornerback against New Orleans on Sunday. Merton Hanks moves from right corner to free safety, bumping Dana Hall from the lineup. . . . The winless Arizona Cardinals, looking for help on offense, gave tryouts to running back Barry Word and quarterback Rich Gannon.
