An Oxnard man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend on Mother’s Day has been convicted of second-degree murder.

A jury in Ventura County Superior Court returned the verdict Thursday against Gary Michael Rose, 25, after deliberating one day.

Prosecutors, who accused Rose of acting with premeditation in the death of 31-year-old Victoria Ramey, had asked the jury to convict the defendant of first-degree murder.

“I think it was a fair verdict,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Donald C. Glynn. “I discussed it with them, and their analysis was sound.”

Rose’s attorney, Deputy Public Defender Douglas W. Daily, had asked the jury to return a verdict of voluntary manslaughter, which carries a penalty of no more than 11 years in prison.

Under the second-degree murder conviction, Rose will face 17 years to life in prison.

Ramey died about 9:30 p.m. May 8 in her home in the 800 block of La Canada Avenue in Oxnard. Glynn said she was shot after Rose pushed her down the stairs of the two-story home.
