Woodbridge overcame five turnovers to defeat University, 23-13, in a nonleague game Friday night at Irvine High School.

The Warriors, ranked seventh in Orange County and fourth in Division V, lost four fumbles. Sophomore quarterback Brian Millat, in his first start after replacing Casey Harris and Rickey Jenkins, each of whom were injured last week, was intercepted once.

Millat completed four of seven passes for 73 yards and one touchdown.

Woodbridge (3-0) won with a strong defensive effort. The Warriors held University (1-2) to 103 yards total offense. University had four turnovers.

Senior linebacker Gavin Crew led the Woodbridge defense with two interceptions. He returned the first 46 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors a 23-7 lead with 6:24 left in the game.

University closed the gap to 23-13 when Kirk Howe connected with Frank Fincher on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 5:19 remaining.

The Trojans also recovered an on-side kick, but Crew later returned an interception 25 yards to the University 25 to seal the victory. Woodbridge then ran out the clock.

University’s first score came when Steve McKee returned a fumble 60 yards with 7:38 left in the first quarter.

Nathan Bennett kicked a 36-yard field goal early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 7-3.

A one-yard touchdown run by Theo Wakefield gave Woodbridge a 9-7 lead with 2:46 left in the second quarter.
