PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Gonzalez, Perry Lead Estancia to Victory Over Calvary Chapel
Bachy Gonzalez and Jeff Perry paced an Estancia ground game that ran past visiting Calvary Chapel, 24-6, at Newport Harbor on Friday night.
Gonzalez led all rushers with 99 yards in 14 carries, while Perry collected both of the Eagles’ rushing touchdowns from a yard out.
“The defense has played good all three weeks and it’s getting better,” Estancia Coach John Liebengood said.
Calvary Chapel (2-1) started slowly, turning the ball over on its 1-yard line on its first possession. Perry converted the first of his one-yard scoring efforts just two plays later, giving Estancia a 7-0 lead just 4 minutes 11 seconds into the game.
Perry lost control of the ball at the goal line late in the second quarter, but Joe Flores pounced on it in the end zone to put Estancia ahead, 21-0, just before halftime.
Estancia’s William Trabazo returned a fumble 60 yards for an apparent touchdown just before halftime, but the play was nullified when Calvary Chapel’s Mark Echan was ruled to have been tackled before he lost the ball.
Ken Nash scored on a 35-yard run on the next play for Calvary Chapel (2-1). Nash finished the game with 93 yards rushing in 17 carries.
