Late Touchdown Runs Help Cal to First Victory : Pac-10: Edwards scores twice in last 7:29 as Bears rally to defeat Arizona State, 25-21.

For Tyrone Edwards, one scoring run led to another.

Both of Edwards’ touchdowns came in the fourth quarter Saturday as California rallied to defeat Arizona State, 25-21, for its first victory of the season.

Cal, 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference, trailed, 21-11, before moving within striking distance on Edwards’ one-yard touchdown run with 7:29 to play. The Golden Bears took the lead on Edwards’ eight-yard sweep with 2:03 remaining.

“After that first touchdown, you could just tell we could run the ball,” Edwards said. “When the defense got the ball back for us, we all said, ‘We could do this again.’ ”

James Stallworth set up Cal’s winning drive with his interception of a pass by Jake Plummer, returning it two yards to the Cal 40.

Dave Barr took over from there, leading the Bears 60 yards in seven plays. His 30-yard completion to Sean Bullard advanced the ball to the 18, and two plays later, Edwards took a pitchout and swept around the right side for the score.

“I turned the corner and there was nothing but daylight. I had to get in,” Edwards said.

Said Barr: “This win means everything. I can’t imagine what another week would have been like if we would have lost.”

Arizona State (1-3, 1-1) got the ball back with two minutes to play, but its last-ditch drive ended in Brandon Whiting’s fourth-down sack of Plummer. Regan Upshaw had sacked Plummer on the previous play.

“We guaranteed (the Cal offense) if they scored after the interception we’d stop them,” Stallworth said. “Everyone lived up to their word.”

Barr completed 27 of 34 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Edwards had 71 yards in 15 carries.
