Fillmore-Made Light Poles Stand Up to Quake Test
If you’ve passed through earthquake-hit Fillmore lately, you may have noticed that at least part of the city came through January’s quake unscathed: the light poles.
The prestressed concrete poles are made by a Fillmore concern, Ameron Pole Products & Systems. “We spin steel wires into the poles; that adds tremendously to their strength,” said John Reynolds, vice president of the division, a unit of Pasadena-based Ameron Inc.
Orders have increased somewhat as word has circulated that Ameron’s poles stood straight and tall when the quake hit Fillmore and several Los Angeles County communities, Reynolds said. “A lot of old-fashioned poles crumbled, but it’s hard to get public officials to acknowledge that it’s time for a change.”
Ameron Pole, which has 85 employees in Fillmore, markets its poles throughout North America.
