ANAHEIM : Council to Air Plan for Group Home

Share

The City Council will have another public hearing today to consider whether to allow a group home for abused women and children in an upscale Anaheim Hills neighborhood.

After protests from neighbors, the council postponed a decision in August about the Eli Home’s proposal to renovate a run-down building on .22 of an acre at the southeast corner of Santa Ana Canyon Road and Canyon Crest Drive.

The nonprofit organization, which has been honored by the last two U.S. Presidents, offers emergency shelter and counseling to victims of abuse.

The Eli Home will submit new architect’s plans for the proposed project today. The council delayed a decision in August after concerns were raised about the design and safety of the Eli Home proposal.

Neighbors also complained that the shelter’s presence would “devastate” their community by bringing in more traffic and the potential for violence. Neighbors said they are afraid an angry spouse may attack someone at the shelter or in the neighborhood.

The home’s new design eliminates the third floor that was originally proposed for the structure.

The new plan has eight bedrooms instead of nine and accommodates up to seven adults, 14 children and a house manager, according to city reports.
