Lannan Literary Awards Announced

The Lannan Foundation has announced the 10 recipients of its 1994 Lannan Literary Awards.

The annual awards are given to writers who have made significant contributions to English-language literature as well as to those with potential for outstanding future work. The recipients include four poets--Simon Armitage, Eavan Boland, Jack Gilbert and Richard Kenney; four fiction writers--Edward P. Jones, Steven Millhauser, Caryl Phillips and Steven Wright; poet and novelist Linda Hogan, and nonfiction writer Jonathan Kozol. Each will receive $50,000.

The Los Angeles-based foundation, which initiated the awards in 1989, had made distinctions between established and emerging writers, assigning fellowships to the latter. This year, it merged the categories.
