A construction worker crossing the street near his work site in Irvine was hit by a truck and killed Monday night, police said.
Gary L. Horvath, 44, of Bellflower was struck about 7:45 p.m. as he walked across Sand Canyon Avenue near the Santa Ana Freeway, Sgt. Scott Cade said. Horvath was rushed to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators found no signs that the truck’s driver, a 21-year-old Marine stationed at the El Toro air base, was speeding or under the influence of alcohol, Cade said. The driver was not cited.
Police said Horvath had finished work at a nearby construction site and might have been returning from a lot where workers store equipment. He was not crossing the street at a marked crosswalk, they said.
