FULLERTON : See ‘Dick and Jane’ Exhibit at Library

Dick and Jane, the stars of a series of children’s books introduced in 1930, will again take center stage this month at an exhibit at the Fullerton Public Library.

“The Story of Dick and Jane” exhibit will include books and memorabilia. The display is from Oct. 10 through Dec. 10.

The popular Dick and Jane books, which by 1960 were being used in 85% of the nation’s school systems and in Canada, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, were created by Zerna Sharp. The series introduced the “look-say” method of teaching children to read, in which words are constantly repeated throughout the books.

During the 1960s, women’s rights and civil rights groups contended that the books were sexist and racist. In response, a multiethnic edition was published in 1965, but the books were eventually phased out of schools.

Many Dick and Jane collectors, however, eagerly seek the books, library officials said.

The free exhibit may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays at the library, 353 W. Commonwealth Ave.
