City Official’s Roommate Dies in Apparent Suicide

Share

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office on Sunday identified the victim of an apparent suicide as Harry Lytle, 55, who shot himself Saturday at the Eagle Rock home he shared with Los Angeles Police Commissioner Art Mattox.

Investigators said Lytle appeared to have died from a gunshot wound to the head. Autopsy results, however, will not be available until today. A gun was recovered near Lytle’s body, sources said.

Mattox, 38, one of five civilians who sets policy for the Los Angeles Police Department, called police about 11 a.m. Saturday to report that his roommate had been shot.

Although everything indicated that the death was a suicide, Chief Willie L. Williams directed that the department’s Robbery-Homicide Division handle the investigation, because the case is considered high-profile.
