A Ventura woman was in critical condition Sunday after suffering severe head injuries when her car careened off California 33 in front of the Villanova Preparatory School in Ojai, officials said.

Rosalie Elizabeth Rivas, 27, was driving southbound on California 33 about 9:45 p.m. Saturday when she lost control of her vehicle and slammed through the rail outside the private school, Ventura County sheriff’s deputies said.

The car struck a tree just off the roadway, and the top portion of the vehicle was sheared off, causing severe head injuries to Rivas.

The car came to rest upside down on the front lawn of the campus, officials said.

The single-car accident was discovered by a passerby who alerted officials.

Rivas was transported to Ojai Valley Hospital for immediate treatment, deputies said.

She was stabilized at the Ojai hospital and transferred to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, where hospital officials listed her condition Sunday as critical.
