OXNARD : Lawn Bowlers Give $10,000 More to City
An Oxnard lawn bowling group has donated $10,000 to the city for a clubhouse and other renovations at Wilson Park, raising its total contribution to about $40,000.
The City Council on Tuesday accepted the donation from the Oxnard-Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club, which plays at the park.
The building is expected to cost about $80,000, said Oxnard Recreation Supervisor Laura Klein Mosqueda.
“It’s allowed the city to have a building they never would have had,” Mosqueda said.
In addition to lawn bowlers, the clubhouse will be used by other seniors’ groups and senior volunteers, Mosqueda said.
The money comes from the Marcellus L. Joslyn Lawn Bowl Foundation, which funds lawn bowling clubs throughout Southern California. The foundation has been contributing to the Oxnard club since 1989.
“We’re a new club, and no way would we have had that kind of money without that,” said Marie Ecton, one of about 50 club members.
A cross between cricket and bowling, lawn bowling is played in lanes drawn on a green, typically 120 square feet. Players try to get the balls, called bowls, as close as possible to a white target, or jack, the size of a cue ball.
