San Onofre : Nuclear Emergency Sirens to Be Tested

Share

Southern California Edison next week plans to test a system of 50 community alert sirens for the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant.

The sirens are within a 10-mile radius of the power plant, including San Onofre State Park, Camp Pendleton, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Dana Point and unincorporated sections of South County.

Each of the sirens will be sounded twice for two to five minutes between 10 a.m. and noon. The test is being conducted in cooperation with local cities.

Federal regulations require the sirens as a way to warn residents in the event of a nuclear emergency.

In such cases, residents are advised to tune to a radio or television for emergency information.

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, however, residents are asked to remember that the sirens are being sounded only as a test and 911 should not be called in response.
