A strong earthquake rocked Taiwan this morning, breaking windows and shaking tiles from buildings in towns along the east coast, officials said.

The quake, measuring a magnitude 5.8 and centered 20 miles east of the town of Chengkung on the Pacific coast, was felt throughout the island, the Central Weather Bureau said. Chengkung is 140 miles south of Taipei.

A spokesman for the National Police Administration said no reports of injuries from the earthquake had been received.
