HUNTINGTON PARK : 800 Attend College Information Fair
More than 800 area 10th-, 11th and 12th-grade students attended a college information fair recently at Huntington Park High School.
College recruiters from throughout California and the country helped students with queries about applications and admissions requirements.
“I talked to the people from Stanford, Harvard and Berkeley,” said Jessica Rochat, 15, a 10th-grader at Huntington Park High who is planning to be a doctor.
“The recruiters basically answered questions about what they could offer and encouraged us to apply despite high costs,” said Rochat, who attended the Oct. 1 conference with her friends.
The purpose of the conference was to promote higher education among Latino students, said Assemblywoman Martha M. Escutia (D-Huntington Park), sponsor of the event.
One-third of the students attending public schools in California are of Latino origin, said Escutia, yet no more than 6% of the University of California graduating class is Latino, and only 11% of students receiving bachelor’s degrees in the state are Latinos.
