Wildlife Loses to Earthmovers

It was with a heavy heart that I read Karen Watson’s letter (Sept. 25). I have to agree with her that the deer she wrote about acted in frustration and fear.

If the “human” developers and Transportation Corridor Agency personnel have their way, in a few years Orange County will be completely paved over.

I moved to Aliso Viejo four years ago because I was charmed by the rolling hills and open spaces, where I could see coyotes, rabbits and skunks when I walked my dog. Now all I see are carcasses of coyotes, rabbits and skunks, and the omnipresent earthmoving machines. I ache with the destruction of all that I’d loved before.

I’ve never been a quitter, but trying to change the course of events in Orange County is an exercise in futility. I moved here from the Bay Area, where rapid transit, recycling and water conservation have been a way of life for decades.

I talked to dozens of people in Aliso Viejo to find out why another freeway, obsolete today and more obsolete when it is finished in three years, is being built when a rapid transit system makes so much more sense.

Sadly, I will probably leave Orange County, as will so many educated and caring people that I know, because we can’t get City Hall to listen.

It’s hard to believe that we can know that we are poisoning our county, have the means to halt the deterioration and yet do nothing.

I hope Donald Bren and all his fellow developers enjoy the morass this county will become when all of us who want to see a patch of earth and a blue sky have gone.
