REGIONAL ROUNDUP : McCoy Propels Utah; Aztecs Lose Gutierrez With Broken Collarbone

Mike McCoy threw for a season-high 354 yards and three touchdowns and Charlie Brown ran for two, including a 50-yarder, as undefeated and 25th-ranked Utah defeated San Diego State, 38-22, Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at San Diego.

McCoy completed 28 of 36 passes with no interceptions for the Utes, 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the WAC.

San Diego State (2-4, 0-3) lost quarterback Tim Gutierrez for the season with a broken collarbone on a sack late in the first half. Gutierrez had surgery Saturday night.

John Walsh completed 25 of 45 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns to lead BYU (5-1, 4-1) to a 32-30 WAC victory over Fresno State (3-3, 1-1) at Fresno. The Bulldogs scored on their first play, a reverse pass with receiver David Dunn passing to Charlie Jones on a 68-yard play and then went up 14-0. But BYU came back to take the lead for good, 25-21, with 22 seconds left in the first half on a 25-yard pass play, Walsh to Itula Mili. . . . Preston McConnell ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, and host Air Force posted its third consecutive victory by crushing Navy, 43-21. The Falcons (3-3) handed Navy (0-5) its 10th loss in a row dating back to last season. . . . Ryan Christopherson ran for 192 yards and two touchdowns in a school-record tying 37 carries to lead Wyoming (3-3) to a 28-14 nonconference victory over Northeast Louisiana (1-5) at Laramie, Wyo.

Randy Gatewood caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jason Davis with 33 seconds remaining as Nevada Las Vegas (4-2, 3-0) rallied for a 24-20 Big West victory over Louisiana Tech (1-4, 0-2) at at Las Vegas. . . . Mike Maxwell threw for three touchdowns to lead Nevada (5-1, 3-0) to a 38-26 Big West victory over turnover-plagued Pacific (2-3, 0-1). Pacific lost three fumbles, two of which the Wolf Pack turned into scores. Defensive end Martin Washington returned one 72 yards for a touchdown. . . . Aaron Gilbert threw for touchdown pass plays of 57 and 74 yards as Northern Illinois (2-4, 1-2) rolled to a 48-27 Big West victory over New Mexico State (2-4, 1-2) at DeKalb, Ill.

Quarterback Kevin Mason accounted for 351 of Syracuse’s 618 yards as the Orangemen, the Big East’s top rushing team, defeated Pittsburgh, 31-7, at Syracuse, N.Y. Mason, a fifth-year senior, ran for a career-high 147 yards in 17 carries and threw for 204, the fifth-best individual offensive performance in Syracuse history. Syracuse’s Kirby Dar Dar ran for a career-best 136 yards in 24 carries. Syracuse’s 618 yards was the third-highest total in school history, and the Orangemen (5-1, 3-0) set a record with 36 first downs. Pitt fell to 1-5, 0-2. . . . Maurice DeShazo threw for two touchdowns and ran for one as No. 20 Virginia Tech (5-1, 3-1) recorded a 41-13 Big East victory over Temple (2-3, 0-1) at Blacksburg, Va.

Robert Higgins threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Funderburk with 8:59 remaining as Rutgers rallied from an 11-point deficit to defeat Army, 16-14, at East Rutherford, N.J. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Scarlet Knights (3-3) and dropped Army to 1-4, its worst start since opening the 1974 season 1-5. . . . Columbia stretched its unbeaten streak to three games, longest in more than 20 years, and handed winless Fordham its sixth consecutive defeat with a 24-13 victory at New York. The victory gave the Lions a 2-1-1 record, their best since they were 3-1-1 on Oct. 21, 1978. . . . Mark DeRosa passed for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth, all in the first half, as Penn (3-0) trounced winless Holy Cross, 59-8, at Philadelphia. . . . Bob Aylsworth established a Yale Bowl record in the 500th game played at the stadium, throwing for 455 yards to lead Lehigh (3-1-1) to a comeback 36-32 victory over Yale (3-1) at New Haven, Conn.
