PREP ROUNDUP : Long Beach Wilson Tips Corona del Mar in Water Polo

Long Beach Wilson’s Adam Wright scored the game-winning goal with 2 minutes 5 seconds remaining to lead the Bruins to a 10-9 nonleague water polo victory over host Corona del Mar on Saturday.

Trailing, 9-8, Wilson (8-1), ranked No. 3 in Southern Section’s Division I, tied the score when Rick Westberg beat Corona del Mar goalie Doug Jetton with 2:40 left to play.

James Palda scored five goals, Thad Buzolich added two and Jetton recorded 10 saves for Corona del Mar (7-3), ranked No. 2 in Division I and Orange County.

In other nonleague water polo:

Esperanza 10, Costa Mesa 9--Mike Stanley scored seven goals, Jason Mericle added two and Peter Lange recorded 17 saves to lead host Esperanza (11-5).

Marina 13, Simi Valley Royal 7--Stever O’Rourke had nine goals for Marina (8-6). Goalie Darin Smith also had nine saves for Marina.

In the Cerritos water polo tournament:

Newport Harbor JV 20, Cypress 17--David Watkins scored a game-high 12 goals, Erik Sandvig had three and Josh Binford added two for Cypress (7-6) in the consolation round. Newport Harbor’s JV team improved to 8-1.

In eight-man football:

Liberty Christian 20, L.A. Pacific Christian 6--Bryan Avery ran for 33 yards and a touchdown and completed five of 12 passes for 19 yards to lead Liberty Christian.

After Paul Lee caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give Pacific Christian a 6-0 lead, Liberty Christian’s Paul Malcom scored on a five-yard run. Avery’s run for the two-point conversion gave the Minutemen an 8-6 lead.

Avery scored on a 13-yard run to give Liberty Christian a 14-6 halftime lead.

In nonleague volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Corona del Mar 2--Ashley Englender had 19 kills to lead Laguna Beach (5-1), 15-7, 15-2, 15-17, 15-17, 15-10.
