Ordinance Adopted to Set Direction for Sidewalk Cyclists

The City Council has adopted an ordinance that requires bicyclists riding on the sidewalk to travel in the same direction as traffic on the adjacent street.

The ordinance, which received final approval last week, applies to sidewalks along major streets, not those along residential streets.

Violation of the ordinance will be punishable by a fine of $25 for the first offense, said police Sgt. Larry Griswold.

The ordinance is expected to result in fewer accidents between bicycles and vehicles when the bicycles cross perpendicular streets and driveways, Griswold said.

Griswold said that in 1991, there were 14 injury accidents involving bicycles. In 1992, that number rose to 36, and last year to 42.

Police plan to start enforcing the ordinance the first week of November, Griswold said.
