SYLMAR : College Job Fair to Offer Career Help

Between 30 and 40 representatives of private and public sector businesses are expected at Mission College’s 1994 job fair, “Focus on Careers.”

Students and community members will have a chance to meet with employers, career counselors and education professionals at the fair, to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at the college’s campus center.

Seminars will be offered on topics including resume writing, interviewing techniques, how to find a job in the federal government, and developing job search strategies.

“This the third year we’ve held the fair--once each semester--and it’s getting bigger and bigger,” said Geri Shapiro, a counselor in the college’s New Horizons Program.

Information will be available on the college’s two-year certificate and associate arts degree programs in culinary arts, gerontology, administration of justice, child development, computer science, business and professional administration, interior design, physics, astronomy and engineering, among others. A new program in intergenerational care also is being offered this year, Shapiro said.

“We’re welcoming everybody who wants help on how to select a career or get a job. It’s free of charge,” Shapiro said.

“People can bring their resumes in and get help, or they can sit in a mock interview and receive a videotaped critique. Some people have been known to line up jobs--some of the companies who come are actively recruiting.”
