Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Newhall Water District Plans Rate Increase
Earthquake damage and street widening projects are the culprits being named as the cause of the first rate increase by the Newhall County Water District in eight years.
The increase, which the agency plans to impose in the next few weeks, will be the subject of a public meeting Thursday.
“It’s probably going to be about $6 a month for the average household,” Robert Wade, president of the district’s board of directors, said of the increase.
He said the district needs the money to cover $500,000 to $600,000 worth of earthquake damage not covered by federal funds, plus $860,000 to move pipes because of road construction.
The agency hopes to raise the money needed to meet these costs over a five-year period, said Lynne Plambeck, another board member.
Public input from Thursday’s meeting could influence the agency’s plan, however, Plambeck said.
The meeting will be at 8 p.m. at William S. Hart High School, 24825 Newhall Ave.
