GARDENA : Council Supports Plan for Shopping Complex
The City Council has tentatively approved controversial plans to construct a 54,000-square-foot shopping complex at Artesia Boulevard and Vermont Avenue.
Council members unanimously supported the plan for a Smith’s Food and Drug Center after a public hearing on the issue Tuesday.
The three-hour hearing drew many public comments for and against the development.
Opponents want the city to use the eight acres of vacant land for a park, incorporating a wetland, known as the Gardena Willows, which is next to the site.
The council is expected to officially approve the center at its Oct. 25 meeting.
