PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : SUNSET LEAGUE : Ponchak’s Late Runs Lead Fountain Valley Past Oilers

Chris Ponchak rushed for two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to help Fountain Valley to a 27-13 victory over Huntington Beach in the Sunset League opener for both teams Friday night at Huntington Beach High.

Ponchak, the Barons’ quarterback, rolled left and ran seven yards into the end zone to put Fountain Valley ahead, 20-13, with 3 minutes 26 seconds left in the game. The score capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive.

Huntington Beach (1-5, 0-1) helped Fountain Valley by jumping offside on third down and five. The penalty gave Fountain Valley (3-3, 1-0) a first down at the Oilers’ 28.

Huntington Beach turned the ball over on downs on its next possession, and Ponchak then put the game out of reach. He rolled right and raced down the sideline, scoring on a 41-yard run with 1:21 left and Fountain Valley led, 27-13.

Ponchak also had a good night passing. He was 18 for 29 for 209 yards with no interceptions. He threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Rumford with 2:19 left in the half. The play put Fountain Valley up, 10-7.

Jason Bartusick kicked field goals of 28 and 42 yards.
