THE WILD MUIR: Twenty-Two of John Muir’s Greatest Adventures selected and introduced by Lee Stetson, illustrated by Fiona King (Yosemite Assn., P.O. Stetson, who has portrayed John Muir in a one-man show for more than a decade, offers a highly readable collection of excerpts from the naturalist’s longer works. The selections emphasize Muir’s delight in exploring untamed nature, often at the risk of his life. In one of his most famous adventures, he climbed a tall Douglas spruce during a violent windstorm, savoring the movements of his precarious perch. His reaction to a powerful earthquake in 1872 was to run from his Yosemite cabin, “both glad and frightened . . . sure I was going to learn something.”
