FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Jordan’s Victory Ends 3 Years of Frustration

Quarterback Nate Turner’s 12-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter ended 31 games of frustration for Jordan, as the Bulldogs held on for a 9-8 victory over Huntington Park on Saturday night at Huntington Park.

But with less than two minutes remaining in the game, a last-ditch drive by Huntington Park and premature celebrations by Jordan players and fans jeopardized the Bulldogs’ victory, their first since 1991.

Players and fans rushed the field after Turner’s touchdown, prompting the referees to penalize the Bulldogs for delaying the game on the ensuing kickoff. Huntington Park took the kickoff, then drove to the Jordan 33, where they faced a 4th and 10.

Jordan defensive end Junior Chavira nailed quarterback Gabriel Madera for a seven-yard sack, ending the comeback drive but setting off a second Jordan celebration that cost it another 15-yard penalty. But the Bulldogs were able to run out the clock.

“I put the guys through extra work this week,” said a pleased coach Willie Brown, who accepted congratulations from his jubilant players and Jordan followers after the game. “That made the difference. They played together as a team and never gave up.”

Brown, the former Raider All-Pro and first-year coach at Jordan, saw Huntington Park overcome a 3-0 deficit when Cesar Aguilera scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter, culminating a 45-yard drive that began after Jordan turned the ball over on a fumble.

Tailback Termell Goss ran for 155 yards on 15 carries. Turner was four for 11 and 117 yards passing and rushed for 58 yards.

“Everybody was a family today,” said Goss. “Everybody came together. And Coach Brown really wanted to win this game.”

Dorsey 14, Carson 13--Antwain Wilson carried 16 times for 112 yards and scored a touchdown and Jemell Gordon had 88 yards in 16 carries as Dorsey used its ground game to defeat defending champion Carson, 14-13, in a rematch of the City 4-A championship game Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Dorsey had 236 yards rushing and only 30 yards passing. Roderick Brown completed two of eight passes, but scored the deciding touchdown on a one-yard sneak with 48 seconds left in the first half. Brown’s score capped a 79-yard, 11-play drive.

Carson running back Joseph Redmond scored touchdowns on two one-yard runs, the latter coming with 7:19 left in the game. A personal foul set back Carson 15 yards on the point-after try, and Rafael Mares’ kick sailed wide right, leaving the Colts a point short of a tie.

Dorsey took the ensuing kickoff and ran 14 plays until time expired.

Westchester 46, Los Angeles 8--Westchester tight end Tony Griffin had 230 all-purpose yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Comets improved to 3-0 in the Coastal Conference.

Comet quarterback Damion Ward passed for 54 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and Brennan Crooks passed for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the second half.

Los Angeles quarterback Patrick Regan completed eight of 29 passes for 131 yards with one interception.

Manual Arts 26, Hamilton 0--Manual Arts running back Erwin Burton returned the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown and quarterback Willie Laffitte threw two touchdown passes in a Coastal Conference game at Manual Arts.

Toiler receiver Reggie Duncan caught five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Hollywood 19, Lincoln 6--George Castro had two fumble recoveries for Lincoln, but the Tigers committed four turnovers in the Northern Conference game at Hollywood.

The most crucial miscue--an interception by Hollywood’s Jorge Juarez--ended a Lincoln drive late in the fourth quarter with Hollywood clinging to a 13-6 lead.

Crenshaw 40, Washington 14--Farrel Payton scored four touchdowns and combined with teammate Anthony Lowrance for 214 yards rushing as they led Crenshaw to a 40-14 Southern Pacific Conference victory.

In the first quarter, the teams scored on their first possessions. But after General running back Dennis Northcutt (409 yards entering the game) left the game with a bruised hand early in the second quarter, the Cougars ran wild.

Payton rushed for 115 yards in 19 carries and three touchdowns.

Jefferson 16, Locke 14--Isaac Hatley rushed for 101 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a controversial score in the second quarter, to help propel the Democrats past the Saints in a Southeastern Conference game at Locke.

With 7:46 left in the second quarter, Hatley took a handoff from quarterback Larry Roberson at the Saints’ four-yard line and surged toward the end zone. Hatley, however, fumbled the ball and the Saints recovered. After a short meeting, the referees decided that Hatley broke the plane of the end zone before fumbling and awarded Jefferson a touchdown to make the score 10-6.

Sirr Parker, who rushed for 149 yards, scored on a 65-yard run on his first carry from scrimmage to put the Saints ahead, 6-0, in the first quarter.

Belmont 17, Marshall 0--George Rodriguez scored on a six-yard touchdown run and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to lead Belmont to a Northern Conference victory over Marshall in the 59th meeting between the two schools at Van Nuys High.

Rodriguez completed seven of 20 passes for 89 yards. Brian Acevedo caught one of Rodriguez’s passes on a sideline pattern to complete a 12-yard scoring play that gave the Sentinels a 14-0 lead.

Franklin 41, Verdugo Hills 7--After missing last week’s game due to suspension, wideout Johnnie Sanders made a glorious return to the Panther lineup, catching three touchdowns in a Northern Conference rout of the Dons.

Sanders, who had four receptions for 119 yards, scored on passes of 41, one and 71 yards from quarterback Jeff Deno.

Deno was 18 of 23 for 245 yards.

Running back Ishmael Dukes opened the game with a 78-yard touchdown run to give Verdugo Hills a short-lived 7-0 lead.

South Gate 21, Garfield 7--Quarterback Juan Vasquez completed only five of nine attempts for 76 yards, but two passes went for touchdowns as the Rams coasted to a Southeastern Conference win at home.

Garfield running back Edgar Soto rushed for 142 yards in 22 carries and scored on a one-yard run that tied the score at 7-7. The Bulldogs played the second half without starting quarterback Eddie Hermoso, who sprained his right ankle.

Bell Gardens 29, Keppel 6--The Lancers overcame 130 yards in penalties to defeat Keppel in an Almont League game at Keppel.

David York ran for 100 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown rushing and receiving. Quarterback Eddie Negrete was eight of 17 for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

Bell Gardens held Keppel to 132 total yards.

St. Paul 10, Loyola 2--A first-quarter 11-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jerry Ceballos was all St. Paul needed to remain undefeated with a 6-0 record in a Del Rey League showdown before 6,000 fans at St. Paul.

After a roughing the punter penalty, St. Paul was given a first down and drove 61 yards in 13 plays. Ceballos scored on a rollout, giving the Swordsmen a 7-0 lead.

Bell 35, Roosevelt 0--Gustavo Valenzuela passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns and Dulio Orellana recovered four turnovers, scoring on two of them, as Bell won a Southeastern Conference game.

Orellana recovered two fumbles, returning one for a 35-yard touchdown, and intercepted two passes, returning the second one for a 90-yard score.

Records: Bell 5-1; Roosevelt 3-3.

Salesian 46, St. Genevieve 31--Wide receiver Rafael Morales scored four touchdowns, including three in the first half, to power Salesian in a Santa Fe League game at Roosevelt High School.

Morales caught four passes for 84 yards, including two for touchdowns of 25 and one yards. He also returned a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and scored on an 11-yard run.

Records: St. Genevieve 0-6; Salesian 2-4.
