Ignacio Brache kicked a 26-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to give Village Christian a 9-6 victory over Kilpatrick in an Alpha League opener Saturday at Kennedy High.

“Our high-powered offense kicked in at the end,” Village Christian Coach Mike Plaisance said with a smile.

Brache, who accounted for all of the Crusaders’ points, tied it, 6-6, midway through the fourth quarter with his second 40-yard field goal.

Village Christian’s defense forced Kilpatrick backward on the ensuing drive. Bret McLeod came up with two consecutive sacks of Kilpatrick quarterback Cesar Cuevas, and the Mustangs were forced to punt from their 15-yard line on fourth and 25 with 1 minute 30 seconds remaining.

Village Christian quarterback Chris Coleman, who replaced an ineffective Cory Reisner after halftime, led the winning drive, which started at the Crusaders’ 37-yard line.

Kilpatrick penalties--14 in all--helped keep the drive alive. Two consecutive pass-interference calls got Village Christian to the Mustangs’ 20-yard line.

Village Christian improved to 3-3, 1-0 in league play.

Kilpatrick (4-2, 0-1) had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Kilpatrick opened the scoring in the first quarter on Cuevas’ 48-yard touchdown pass to Henry Flowers.
