A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* OFF-RAMP CLOSURE--Initiated proceedings to have the Waterford Street off-ramp on the southbound San Diego Freeway closed because of a high number of accidents and low usage. The California Department of Transportation will make the final decision on the off-ramp, which is between Wilshire and Sunset boulevards. The ramp exits into a neighborhood.

STREET CLOSURE--Approved the closure of Sunset Boulevard between Gardner Street and Olive Drive on Nov. 13 from 7 to 10 a.m. for a 5K run/walk. The event is sponsored by Project Angel Food, a nonprofit organization that prepares and delivers hot meals to home-bound people with AIDS.

HOW THEY VOTED

* CHILDREN’S CENTER--Approved the establishment of the Westside Children’s Center at 12120 Wagner St. in Mar Vista. The facility will provide care for up to 50 children in a 9,800-square-foot, two-story building. Several neighborhood residents were against the center, in part because of the increase in traffic it would cause. Proponents contended that the increase would be slight and argued that it was a small price to pay for the center.

* ATTRACTING BUSINESS--Authorized the director of planning to accept a $1.2-million grant from the federal government to fund a study of ways to create incentives for businesses to locate near bus and subway stops. Increasing business traffic around those stops presumably would increase public transit ridership.
