Cypress looks like a typical suburb today. But 100 years ago, the city consisted mostly of flat grassland.
At the turn of the century, the area was known as Waterville because of the artesian wells used by sugar beet farmers.
In 1895, officials named a school at Moody Avenue and Ball Road “Cypress School.” It is unclear how the school got its name, because there were no trees on the campus at the time.
From the mid-1940s until 1965, Cypress was known for its dairy farms. The average ratio of cows to people was 10,000 to 1 during this period.
As dairy farming became less profitable in the 1960s, the cows were slowly moved out, and homes were built.
Today
A series of business workshops will be held to commemorate Orange County Small Business Tax Day.
The free workshops will begin at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day at the Robert B. Moore Theatre at Orange Coast College, 2701 Fairview Road in Costa Mesa.
Speakers from the State Board of Equalization, Franchise Tax Board and Internal Revenue Service will be on hand.
